An oilfield foamer is not a shampoo amide. It is the surfactant that builds circulating foam for air-mist drilling or lifts water from a loaded gas well. Esteem’s foaming agent table is two published grades. Specify the operation, then the ligand—not one drum for every well.
What the Foaming-Agent Table Is For
Oil and gas foam jobs fail for different reasons: air-mist cuttings transport, foam-flood mobility, and gas-well water unloading. Esteem publishes Foamer CD and Foamer HS. This guide maps them. It is not a finished foam-stick recipe, a firefighting foam listing, or a personal-care chassis.
Esteem Grades by Job
| Grade (as listed) | Chemistry | Start here when |
|---|---|---|
| Foamer CD | Anionic surfactant | Air-mist drilling; stimulation; well cleanout; drowned-gas-well water recovery |
| Foamer HS | Hydroxysultaine (cocamidopropyl hydroxysultaine) | Drilling foam bases; foam flooding; gas-well unloading |
Anionic Air-Mist Foamer vs Sultaine Unloading Package
Foamer CD is written for high, stable foam under a variety of conditions, including fresh and salt water. Use it when the brief is circulating foam in air-mist or a cleanout, not when the brief is a leave-on cosmetic wash. Foamer HS is an amphoteric hydroxysultaine listed for foam bases, floods, and unloading. Amphoterics often sit differently in hard brine than a straight anionic—confirm compatibility with corrosion inhibitors and scavengers before you tank-mix.
Keep these grades off the personal-care foaming table. CMEA, glyceryl cocoates, coco betaine, and lauryl amine oxide are a different catalogue. Request named oilfield grades from foaming agents.
Match the Operation to the Grade
| Operation | Start with (as listed) | Wrong default |
|---|---|---|
| Air-mist drilling; well stimulation; disposal/water-well cleanout; drowned-gas-well water recovery | Foamer CD (anionic) | A shampoo amide or liquid soap stick melt |
| Drilling foam base; foam flood; gas-well unloading package | Foamer HS (hydroxysultaine) | Assuming CD and HS match foam texture 1:1 |
| Solid stick placement downhole | Soap-stick bases (NPE / PEG solids) | Pouring Foamer CD into a stick mould as the only base |
| Post-frac capillary water block | Flowback-aids guide | More circulating foamer as a flowback package |
Foam Height Is Not the Whole Job
Air-mist drilling needs foam that carries cuttings and survives the circulation loop. Gas-well unloading needs foam that lifts water with produced gas, then breaks in surface equipment. Foam flooding needs a base that stays compatible with the flood design. Foamer CD’s published comments (high stable foam, fresh and salt water, air-mist, stimulation, cleanout, drowned-well recovery) match circulating and cleanout work. Foamer HS’s published comments (drilling foam bases, foam flooding, gas-well unloading) match formulated packages and deliquification. Do not pick the louder foam in tap water and call the well done.
List corrosion inhibitor, H2S scavenger, and demulsifier on the sample request. Anionic CD and amphoteric HS will not tank-mix the same way with those treating chemicals. If the separator later fills with foam, stop adding foamer and open the defoamer / demulsifier brief.
Brine, Temperature, and What Not to Scale
Run foam height and half-life in the actual brine, not distilled water. Salt, hardness, and condensate kill foam that looked perfect in a lab jar. Bottomhole temperature belongs on the same sheet. A drowned-gas-well recovery trial is not an air-mist cuttings trial—name the operation so Esteem does not ship the wrong grade as “any foamer.”
Soap sticks are a placement method, not a substitute chemistry. If the field wants a stick, use the soap-stick bases table for the solid chassis and keep Foamer CD / HS as liquid surfactants unless the stick recipe is designed around them. Flowback after hydraulic fracturing is still a different surfactant job—flowback aids.
Air-Mist Cuttings vs Deliquification
Air-mist drilling uses foam to carry cuttings in a circulating loop. The foam has to survive the wellbore, then dump at surface without leaving a pit that never breaks. Foamer CD is published as an anionic surfactant for high, stable foam in fresh or salt water, with air-mist, stimulation, disposal-well cleanout, and drowned-gas-well water recovery on the same row. That is circulating and cleanout language. It is not a published foam-flood recipe and it is not a soap stick.
Gas-well unloading uses foam to lift accumulated water with produced gas so the well can flow. Surface equipment then has to break that foam. Foamer HS is published as cocamidopropyl hydroxysultaine for drilling foam bases, foam flooding, and gas-well unloading. Sultaine packages are built, not poured as “more CD.” If the field already runs a stick program, keep liquid CD/HS on this table and the solid chassis on the soap-stick bases table unless the stick recipe is designed around a named liquid foamer.
Hardness, Condensate, and Treating Chemicals
The table’s fresh-and-salt-water comment on Foamer CD is a salinity window, not a skip of the brine jar. Hardness, iron, and condensate change foam texture and half-life. Run the actual well water. Bottomhole temperature belongs on the same sheet as salinity. A drowned-well recovery trial at one temperature is not an air-mist cuttings trial at another.
Corrosion inhibitor, triazine H2S scavenger, and demulsifier often share the wellbore or the flowline. Anionic Foamer CD and amphoteric Foamer HS will not tank-mix with those treating chemicals in the same way. List them on the sample request. If the separator later fills with foam, that is a treating problem: stop adding foamer and open the defoamer / demulsifier brief. Post-frac capillary water block remains a flowback-aid job, not a circulating-foamer job.
Do not send Foamer HS into a shampoo notebook because the INCI string looks like a personal-care sultaine. Coco betaine, CMEA, and amine oxide for rinse-off cosmetics sit on the personal-care foaming guide. These two grades are oilfield.
How to Specify with Esteem
- Name air-mist, foam flood, or unloading; salinity; and bottomhole temperature.
- List other treating chemicals (inhibitor, triazine scavenger, demulsifier) that will share the wellbore.
- Request Foamer CD vs Foamer HS as named grades.
- Foam-height and half-life tests in the actual brine; do not scale a tap-water jar test to a well.
