Automatic dishwashing is a low-foam, spray-recirculation chassis. Hand dishwashing is a high-foam, grease-first chassis. Specify low-foam surfactants against machine shear, temperature, and alkalinity—not against sink foam aesthetics from an HDL brief under home care.

What an Autodish Surfactant System Must Do

Machine dishwashers—domestic autodish and institutional warewash—recirculate hot, often alkaline liquor through spray arms. Foam that looks “rich” in a cylinder test floods sumps, trips level sensors, and starves pumps. The surfactant job is wetting, soil emulsification, and rinse assist with controlled foam under shear. That brief sits under home care chemicals and is productized on low-foam surfactants.

Industrial recirculating cleaners share the same foam physics. Use low-foam surfactants for industrial cleaning as parallel reading even when enzymes, bleach, and builders differ from a consumer tablet.

Machine Dish vs Hand Dish — Do Not Copy Chassis

Hand dishwashing liquid (HDL) optimizes flash foam and grease cut at ambient dilution. Selection logic for that format is in hand dishwashing liquid surfactant selection. Importing that anionic primary + foam booster package into autodish is a common failure mode: foam overflow without better spotting performance. Match format first—hand vs machine—then chemistry.

Format Foam expectation Typical surfactant start
Hand dishwashing (HDL) High, visible foam through soil Anionic primary + mid-EO nonionic + foam helper
Automatic / machine dish Low / controlled under spray shear EO/PO low-foamers and/or end-capped nonionics
Institutional CIP / washer Low foam, alkali-stable Same low-foam families; confirm caustic window
Not the autodish default Consumer HDL foam aesthetics Do not copy HDL ratios into machine gels/tablets

EO/PO Copolymers and End-Capped Grades

Esteem positions low-foam nonionic wetters based on alkoxylate chemistry—managing degree of alkoxylation or alkyl chain for low foam, fast wetting, and detergency. The product page lists EO-PO copolymer grades in the PFL series (including PFL-021, PFL-022, PFL-004, PFL-503, PFL-504, PFL-005, PFL-109) and end-capped surfactants such as O11-BC and CSLF-17. End-capped grades are developed for low-to-no foam with caustic and acid stability; see also end-capped surfactants.

Do not treat EO/PO and end-capped as interchangeable SKUs. Screen foam height, cloud point, and grease removal in the real builder at wash temperature. Request named grades from the tables—do not invent catalogue numbers.

Builder, Temperature, and Foam Protocol

Autodish builders (alkali, silicate, bleach, enzymes where used) move cloud point and foam lifetime. A grade that is quiet in soft DI water can foam when hardness, protein soil, or rinse aid is present. Protocol minimums: foam under spray or recirculation at wash temperature, soil panel (grease/starch), spotting/filming on glass, and machine sensor margin. Marketing “powerful clean” without a foam limit is a formulation risk.

Chassis Decision Map

Brief signal Start here Do not assume
Domestic autodish / institutional warewash PFL EO/PO and/or end-capped (O11-BC, CSLF-17) path That HDL foam package will machine-wash
High alkali / hot recirculation End-capped + EO/PO with caustic screen That room-temp cylinder foam predicts field foam
Consumer hand dish, high foam HDL surfactant selection That low-foam autodish grades deliver sink foam cue
Industrial spray / CIP cleaning Application note + low-foam hub That autodish tablet ratios equal CIP dose

How to Specify with Esteem

  1. Name automatic / machine dishwashing (not hand dish, not laundry).
  2. State machine type, wash temperature, and alkalinity or pH window.
  3. Define foam limit (sump / sensor) and soil panel (grease, starch, protein).
  4. Say whether EO/PO PFL grades, end-capped grades, or both families should be screened.
  5. Request named candidates from low-foam surfactants under home care—not an HDL sample relabelled for machines.
