Tissue softness is a controlled reduction of fiber bonding plus surface friction—not “more surfactant.” Specify nonionic / ester debonder chemistry against your dry and wet tensile floors under tissue paper chemicals, not against a laundry softener brief.

What Softness and Debonding Must Deliver

Facial tissue, toilet tissue, and towel grades all sell “soft,” but the machine jobs differ. Softness programs must raise hand feel and bulk while keeping converting tensile, crepe structure, and—where required—wet integrity. Those constraints sit inside the paper chemicals portfolio, with tissue-specific aids on tissue paper chemicals.

Debonders work by interrupting interfiber hydrogen bonds so the sheet flexes and feels less boardy. Softeners and surface lubricants reduce coefficient of friction. Both are typically mild nonionics or fatty esters—not high-foam laundry anionics and not wet-strength resins. Treat softness chemistry as its own brief, then co-optimize strength.

Nonionic and Ester Chemistry Families

Most wet-end and stock-additive debonders lean on nonionic surfactants (including ethoxylated fatty alcohols or related mid-HLB nonionics) and ester chemistries (fatty esters and related softener esters). Nonionics adsorb and plasticize fiber–fiber contacts; esters contribute lubricity and hand. Neither replaces Yankee coating design or crepe blade setup—chemistry amplifies a mechanical softness path; it does not invent one.

Role Typical chemistry family What to measure
Debonder / softener Nonionic ethoxylates; fatty esters Hand feel / TSA, bulk, MD/CD dry tensile drop
Wet strength (where needed) Wet-strength enhancer grades on tissue tables Wet tensile, soak integrity, cure window
Dry strength / converting Dry-strength aids used in live pulp & tissue Dry tensile, burst where relevant, converting scrap
Not the tissue default Laundry softener packages; high-foam detergent anionics Only if brief is textile/homecare—not wet-end tissue

Related process chemistry: foam control via paper defoamers; formation and retention context on sheet-making retention and drainage. Softness that creates sticky deposits shifts the problem to felt cleaning.

Wet-Strength Trade-Offs

Every debonder dose that improves hand feel can cut dry bonding and, when wet-strength resin is marginal, wet tensile. Towel and premium facial grades that claim wet integrity cannot “softness-first” their way past resin and cure limits. Co-specify softener chemistry with wet-strength enhancer level—do not raise softener alone and hope wet tensile holds.

Dry-strength enhancers protect converting when softness chemistry lowers tensile. They are not a substitute for wet-strength where soak performance is the claim. The sizing/strength guide covers dry vs wet strength roles for paper grades: paper sizing, water resistance, and strength aids. Tissue mills should still state grade (facial vs towel) on the RFQ—liner-style wet-strength thinking does not map 1:1 to soft tissue.

What Not to Copy from Laundry or Homecare Softeners

Fabric softeners optimize rinse deposition, fragrance, and textile hand. Tissue stock chemistry must survive wet-end pH, retention aids, Yankee coating, and high-speed converting. Copying a laundry softener ratio into the chest usually fails on foam, deposits, or tensile. Keep laundry and tissue as separate approved lists even when both use ester or nonionic language.

Likewise, do not treat tissue softness as a sizing or Cobb problem. Water holdout for writing/liner grades is a different brief under sizing chemicals. Softness is bonding and friction—not Cobb.

Chassis Decision Map

Brief signal Start here Do not assume
Facial / toilet tissue, softness claim, converting OK Nonionic/ester debonder + dry tensile floor That laundry softener chemistry transfers
Towel / wet-use facial, wet integrity required Softener dose co-balanced with wet-strength enhancer That more softener alone keeps wet tensile
Harsh sheet, strength already high Debonder screening + crepe/Yankee audit That chemistry fixes a blade/coating issue alone
Foam or clothing deposit after softener trial Defoamer / felt cleaning path That softness chemistry is runnability-neutral

How to Specify with Esteem

  1. Name tissue grade (facial, toilet, towel) and furnish (virgin, recycled blend, CTMP, etc.).
  2. State softness priority vs dry tensile vs wet tensile; say which gate fails first today.
  3. Note Yankee coating type and whether wet-strength resin is already in the system.
  4. List allowed chemistry families (nonionic ethoxylate, ester softener) and any cationic softener constraints.
  5. Request debonder/softener screening from paper chemicals / tissue / nonionic / ester hubs—not a single unnamed “softness surfactant.”

Contact Esteem for tissue softener–debonder screening, or custom synthesis when the brief needs a non-catalogue cut.
