Neutralization sets the charge window; retanning fill sets the feel. Esteem’s liquid syntans separate buffering neutralizing grades from acrylic and protein retanners—specify pH target and handle, not “any liquid syntan.”
Why Liquid Syntans Matter After Chrome Tannage
Chrome wet-blue arrives acidic. Before dye and fatliquors can deliver level shade and soft cross-section feel, the tannery must raise pH under control and often retan for fullness, grain tightness, and lightfast character. Liquid syntans cover that wet-process window: neutralizing syntans with buffering action, acrylic polymeric retanners, maleic-acrylic copolymers for soft/mellow feel, and protein-based fillers for selective fill on soft aniline and loose stock.
Feel after staking is a system result. Over-alkaline neutralization damages chrome character and grain; under-neutralization leaves harsh centres and uneven dye. Heavy acrylic fill without matching fatliquor can feel rubbery but dry; protein fill without leveling can hide dye defects until finish. Treat liquid syntans as part of the full leather chemicals route—beam house through finishing—not as a single drum “softener.”
Neutralization vs Retanning Feel Roles
Neutralizing chemistry and retanning chemistry share the liquid syntan table but do different jobs. VENTAN LNS is listed as a neutralizing syntan based on aromatic sulfonic acid salts with buffering agents—it neutralizes at fairly low pH while retaining grain character. Acrylic grades such as VENTAN RE and VENTAN RT fill and tighten; VENTAN MA targets soft, mellow feel (including upholstery wet-toggling context on the product table). Protein fillers VENTAN RPF and VENTAN VEF add selective filling and softening for chrome leather, including soft aniline routes.
| Role | What it mainly delivers | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| Neutralizing syntan (e.g. VENTAN LNS) | Buffered pH rise; electrolyte stability; grain retention during neutralization | That it replaces acrylic fill for fullness |
| Acrylic retanner (e.g. VENTAN RE / RT) | Fullness, grain fineness/tightness, lightfast fill, buffability | That one acrylic grade fits every article dose |
| Maleic-acrylic soft feel (e.g. VENTAN MA) | Soft/mellow handle; upholstery-oriented retan character | That soft feel removes the need for fatliquoring |
| Protein fillers (e.g. VENTAN RPF / VEF) | Selective fill of loose areas; softening contribution for soft aniline | That protein fill levels dye by itself |
State the article on every sample request. Upper leather tightness, upholstery mellow feel, nappa softness, corrected-grain buffability, and suede handle share “soft” language but not the same liquid package or %. Coordinate with powder syntans when phenolic, melamine resin, or dye-leveling powder stages are already in the retan recipe.
Process Position: Neutralize, Retan, Dye, Soften
A common chrome dye-house sequence is: wet-back / wash → neutralize → retan (liquid and/or powder) → dye → optional dye fixing → main fatliquoring → dry / stake / mill. Liquid neutralizing grades belong in the neutralization float; acrylic and protein grades usually follow once pH is in the working window. Some programmes combine or stage fill with dyeing—record float %, temperature, and addition order, not only offered % on shaved weight.
If feel is uneven after staking, audit upstream first. Residual natural fat and scud from a weak beam-house programme create soft/hard maps that look like retan failure. Use beam house chemicals guidance and the companion beam-house wetting article before raising liquid syntan dose. Compatibility with Dye, Fatliquor, and Finish
Acrylic liquid syntans on the Esteem table are described as compatible with other syntans, vegetable extracts, anionic dyes, and fatliquors when used as directed. That compatibility still requires bath discipline: ionic clashes, premature acidification, or overfill change exhaustion and shade. Dye leveling may need a dedicated powder dispersing syntan (for example VENTAN DPS on the powder table) rather than more acrylic polymer.
Finish adhesion and surface handle depend on residual retan and oil at the grain. Overfilled, greasy, or under-softened crust fights finishing chemicals. Align liquid syntan choice with the finish brief (aniline, pigmented, corrected grain) and with fatliquor lightfastness needs—especially for white and pastel stock where acrylic lightfast fill is a stated benefit of grades such as VENTAN RE/RT.
Article Targets and Selection Emphasis
| Article / feel target | Selection emphasis | Watch-outs |
|---|---|---|
| Shoe upper / firm grain | Controlled neutralization; acrylic tightness and fine grain; finishable surface | Overfill that loads loose flanks unevenly; harsh centres from under-neutralization |
| Upholstery / soft mellow | Soft-feel acrylic copolymer character; balanced fill vs fatliquor | Assuming retan alone delivers nappa softness |
| Soft aniline / garment | Protein selective fill; gentle neutralization; lightfast packages for pale shades | Hiding beam-house fat maps with more filler |
| Corrected grain / buffable | Acrylic fill with even buffing character (as listed for acrylic retanners) | Changing only finish binder when retan fill is uneven |
How Softness and Fullness Interact
Retanning fullness and fatliquor softness are related but not identical. Liquid acrylics contribute rubbery touch and cross-section fill; protein fillers soften and fill selectively; fatliquors lubricate fibres so the crust flexes after drying. Raising only one lever rarely fixes a harsh panel. Pair liquid syntan selection with the fatliquor brief—see the companion guide on leather fatliquors for softness and feel—and with dye fixation if wet rub or bleed is part of the customer specification.
Powder neutralizing syntans (phenolic or naphthalene types on the powder table) can appear in the same neutralization window as liquid neutralizing grades. If your tannery already runs a powder neutralizing package, say so on the brief so Esteem does not duplicate or clash chemistries in the trial plan.
How to Specify with Esteem
- Name hide/skin type (bovine, goat, sheep, split) and whether stock is wet-blue, shaved, or crust wet-back.
- State tannage (chrome, combination) and current neutralization pH target / time / temperature.
- Define the end article and feel target (upper tightness, upholstery mellow, nappa soft, corrected-grain buffable).
- Call out lightfastness for white/pastel, dyeing system (anionic dyes), and finish type.
- List powder syntans, fatliquors, and dye fixers already locked in the recipe so liquid candidates fit the bath.
- Request distinct roles from the liquid syntans product table—neutralizing vs acrylic vs protein—not one unnamed “liquid syntan.”
